I took an older lab that I enjoyed doing and updated it a bit. I also added a conclusion for them to write using Claim Evidence Reasoning and a section for body system interactions. Our standards focus heavily on how the body systems work together, not just what they do. So, as I’ve updated some of the body systems labs, I’ve been adding that in. For the reaction time card, I just searched for one and found this one. It worked perfect.

As a follow up discussion, we reviewed how the reaction took place and why they tended to react slower to some stimuli. For my G/T they led that into a discussion about practicing and getting better and how that works. We also got into the systems working together; I told them there wasn’t really a “wrong” answer if they could justify it. Although, immune seems like a stretch, that was just a challenge that a few of mine decided to accept. I even made it a little more fun by giving them a piece of candy as they were working “as a hint for a certain system that delivers one of the reactants to make ATP.” Overall, the lab went well, there were plenty of laughs to be had by all and the major focus for us was the writing and the system interactions, not how the nervous system functions or the neural pathways.
